Chereskin (1983) measured the across-bank component of the tide on the crest of the Bank. The eastward (ebbing) tide was found to be roughly twice as strong as the westward (flooding) flowing tide. Our observations in the middle of the basin agree with the intensity measured during the ebb phase, once continuity is factored in, but show a symmetrical response during the flood phase. The discrepancy with Chereskin's measurements could be due to several factors. Her estimate was based on data collected from a fixed mooring near the crest of the Bank equipped with three current meters located at depths of 6, 13 and 19.5 m. A different baroclinic structure of the ebbing and flooding flow, which is likely, due to the asymmetry of the Bank, could result in different estimates if the vertical profile is undersampled.

More precisely, every $T_{M2}/12$ hours, where $T_{M2}$ is the period of the semidiurnal tide.
