The Academic Enhancement Program
Teague Residence Hall CB# 5500
University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill
Chapel Hill, NC 27514
The Academic Enhancement Program is part of the Living/Learning Program
sponsored by Residence Housing at the University of North Carolina at
Chapel Hill. Residents of AEP are selected yearly based on an application
and interview process.
AEP residents serve the University Community -- and themselves -- in
many ways. AEP students have been involved in community projects, such as
Hurricane Fran clean-up, Big Buddy/Little Buddy and Rainbow Soccer.
Many residents participate in an in-house mentoring program and help one
another with classes and Univeristy paperwork.
The AEP is located on middle campus in Teague Residence Hall. We are
happy to announce that Teague is getting somewhat of a facelift this
summer -- new paint, fluorescent lighting and built-in lofts will be there
to welcome students back in the fall.
Once a student is selected for the AEP, there are three areas of
activity the resident must complete each semester. These are the AEP
requirements:
- WORKSHOPS-- Residents are required to
attend 3 workshops per semester on topics like Study Habits,
Relaxation Techniques, The Holocaust, GRE, MCAT, and LSAT
Preparation, and Getting in to Medical/Law School. There are
usually about 40 workshops offered per semester, and most are held in the
basement of Teague in the evenings, so they are convenient for the
students.
- COMMUNITY SERVICE-- Residents must
complete 10 hours of community service per semester. Residents have, in
the past, volunteered at UNC Hospitals, worked in the Chapel Hill-Carrboro
schools, helped out at local soup kitchens and homeless shelters, and
donated time to the Carnivore Preservation Trust in Pittsboro. At the
beginning of each semester, there is a Community Service Fair so that
students unfamiliar with volunteerism in the area can find
an appropriate place to complete their requirement. Many of the residents
find they enjoy their work so much they spend more than 10 hours a
semester there -- a resident in the Spring of 1997 completed almost 70
hours in the Pediatric unit of UNC Hospitals!
- GROUP ACTIVITY-- Residents must
participate in at least one activity that involves working as a team with
other residents around them. They must meet with this team at least once
a month, though we've found that most groups meet more often than that.
We hope that this area of activity strengthens the sense of community in
the residence hall. Group activities available in the past few semesters
have included:
- study groups--In the spring we had Chem 41, Chem 61, Bio 11,
Econ 10, and Psych 10 study groups, just to name a few.
- interest/discussion groups--The topics for discussion are
supplied by students each semester. In the spring, we had groups that met
to discuss women's issues, politics and current events, movies and sports,
and science fiction and gaming.
- writing workshop--The Writing Center and Nandra Perry, our
assistant area director AND a graduate student in English, are on hand to
meet with students to work on writing skills. This is especially helpful
for first and second-year students.
