Eating Disorders Among Young Women |
|
"With
7,000 female undergraduate students at UNC-Chapel Hill...around 1,700
female students would statistically have an eating disorder." (WRAL.com). |
Ten Things Everyone Should Know About Eating Disorders and College Women
-
One out of every four
women on college campuses has some kind of eating disorder.
-
65% of the entire
female population is affected by an eating disorder, or nearly 5-10
million women.
-
The most extreme forms
of eating disorders are anorexia nervosa(under-eating/excessive exercise
that results in weight loss to dangerously low levels), bulimia nervosa
(consuming large amounts of food and then "purging" in some
way) and binge eating disorder ("binging" without subsequent
"purging").
-
25-40% of female undergraduates
deal with a more moderate form of disordered eating (i.e. habitual
dieting) and cannot be diagnosed as having "full-blown"
anorexia, bulimia or binge eating disorder.
- The malnourishment caused by more
extreme forms of eating disorders affects the body rapidly and can lead
to many severe consequences, including serious heart problems.
-
Research has shown
that 80% of women are dissatisfied with their appearance.
- A recent survey showed that 91% of
women on college campuses had attempted to control their weight through
dieting.
- The most significant cause of eating
disorders and/or body dissatisfaction among young women is societal
pressure and a culture that values "thinness over fitness".
- Studies have found that women anticipating
a "male gaze" were likely to report "greater body shame,
social physique anxiety and intent to diet" than when anticipating
a female gaze.
- Most fashion models are thinner than
98% of women.
