From: alt.music.chapel-hill Guide to the Triangle site:

Saturday, June 27
Mercury Birds, Mind Sirens
Lizard and Snake, Chapel Hill

Mercury Birds are all about love. Not sweet sappy treacly love, but strong sweeping waves of love, the kind which sound like big fat guitars. They're an odd mix of influences, so much so that

I don't know where to begin down that path. So, rather, here are some components: electric 12-string guitar played through a bass amp and strummed quite loudly and quickly; the inimitable John Sherman on drums (one of the 3 loudest, most-controlled rock drummers in the state of NC, mark my words); singer Art Jackson's suave tween-song patter and his long, strong vowels. Plus they rock like crazy. They thrill me. See the show, buy the 7".

Mind Sirens have been around a hell of a lot longer than the Mercs, and they're perhaps even more difficult to describe than the Mercs. Here's their rather amazing website: http://www.swepssax.com/~sirens

Mind Sirens make "indie-rock" which centers around the chiming guitar, wailing voice, and dramatic, remarkably detailed songs of Brian Butler. Although the other day I was listening to a half- finished Mind Sirens song from their webpage and was reminded of the Allman Brothers. (it was the guitar). Southern Gothic, but not in any of the ways you might imagine.

Sunday, June 28
Mind Sirens live on Radio
WXDU FM 88.7, Durham

I believe I took a stab at describing Mind Sirens directly above this entry, so I won't try again. They've been recording and playing as the Mind Sirens for roughly 10 years, and in some component form as Other Bright Colors for the whole second half of the 80s as well. Brian Butler writes great melancholic or dramatic or cinematic songs, and plays them appropriately.

This will be at about 3:00 p.m. on your FM radio. WXDU 88.7.
