Monday, January 6: Mind Sirens at Henry's Bistro, Chapel Hill
The Indy claims this "inaugurates a new Monday-night music series at Henry's," but it's a new Monday-night music series that's been going on for the past several months. Here's the deal: drinking starts whenever drinking starts. Music starts 'round Midnight. Hat is passed. Scenester cred is gained and lost, much as it is in that French film, _Ridicule_. Oh, and this week, Mind Sirens continue their recent active streak by actually playing.
Once upon a time, I wouldn't have had to explain Mind Sirens. But given their recent dormancy, I guess now's my big chance to tell whatever lies I want about 'em.
Here's one: back in the glory days of Blue Green Gods, at least 1/3 of the covers BGG played were Brian Butler songs, either by his current band, Mind Sirens, or his previous local megastar band, Other Bright Colors. Of course, by the time they'd been churned through the damaged psyche of Todd Goss, they didn't necessarily *sound* like Brian's songs, but the fact that they survived the process at all is testament to his songwriting prowess.
(Wanna hear one? Cue up BGG's "Water," on the D-Tox _Pyloric Waves_ compilation. Hands-down the finest moment on that CD, and perhaps in BGG's career as well. Though their cover of "Breton" was awe-inspiring as well.)
Anyway. None of this explains Mind Sirens. Shrill, hyperactive guitars and Brian's shrill, hyperactive voice. Each making melodies, though not always the same one.
Aw, hell. What else is there to do on a Monday night anyway?
