Hooker’s Vision, Moeser’s Direction Merge to Shape UNC
No Background Checks Slated Despite Arrests
Call and Response
April 23, 2001

James Moeser didn't step into the office of UNC chancellor with a clean slate.

The University's top administrative official inherited an ambitious plan to give every student Internet access, a blueprint for 50 years of campus growth and a lofty goal of making UNC the best public university in the nation.

They all came from the unfinished agenda of the late Michael Hooker, who died of cancer in June 1999.

Trying to describe the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks can place
a student at a loss for words.

Conveying the sights, sounds and feelings raised by such
a horrific and unprecedented event can be a challenge for
even the most articulate youth.

But when many such students are asked to describe what
they did in response to the attacks, they suddenly have
much to say.

campaigns and platforms in order to appeal to a broader audience.

The candidates in this year's student elections feel that a higher voter turnout will force campaigns to solicit support from more than just major student organizations.

Last year 9,735 out-of-state students applied to UNC-Chapel Hill, a total that is 40 percent higher than the number of in-state applicants.

But nearly 8,000 of those students received rejection letters in reply.

For many of these denied applicants, their rejections came as a result of the
University's only quota related to admissions -- an 18 percent cap on
out-of-state freshman enrollment.

Before Student Body President-elect Jen Daum posted her first campaign flier, she already was bucking a UNC trend.

When Daum officially declared her candidacy for student body president in January, she became just the 12th woman in the last 10 years to run for the position -- compared to 44
male candidates during that time period.

Daum broke another campus trend Tuesday when she was elected as only the third female student body president since the position's inception in 1921.

Master Plan Continues on Track Despite Numerous Revisions
April 03, 2001

Senior Brad Matthews departs from the office of student body president today, leaving his administration and accomplishments to memory.
And Matthews says he doesn't care if they're forgotten.

As he hands over the reins of Suite C to junior Justin Young, Matthews said the greatest achievements of his term will be defined by the success of student government in the future -- and won't be directly attributed to his administration.

If the UNC-Chapel Hill Board of Trustees approves a tuition increase proposal today, officials say the money will be funneled primarily to faculty in the College of Arts and Sciences, whose salaries lag behind those of faculty in UNC-CH's professional schools.

But handing out the money raised from the proposed one-year, $400 tuition increase would be no simple task -- the average faculty salary varies widely between schools at the University and between departments within the schools.

With the blaring sounds of construction equipment in the background, the Master Plan was a noticeable presence on campus this year with the groundbreaking of new South Campus residence communities.

Threads of Local Music
October 10, 2002

While most students cram for their midterm exams, senior Charles Battle is at work on his anthology of poetry.

And with 40 lines due every week, it's a task that weighs heavily on his mind.

"It's the centerpiece of my schedule," Battle said. "Everything else has been pushed off to the side."

February 06, 2003

In today's national music scene, there are a lot of eyes turned toward Chapel Hill. Ever since local acts such as Superchunk, Ben Folds Five and the Squirrel Nut Zippers became household names in the mainstream music world, artists nationwide have fixed their gazes on an area long noted for its liberal environment

Veterans of the scene say that kind of attention has allowed new local acts to seize the spotlight.

It's also upped the competitive ante

Artistic Community
Students, Alumni To Organize 6 Plays In Overnight Effort

January 16, 2003

For a program that is already well-established and almost universally praised, Arts Carolina is operating in a state of continued limbo.

The program has just completed its three-year initiative, and during that time it can lay claim to organizing several festivals, publicizing hundreds of arts events through its Web site and periodical, leading an artistic campus response to Sept. 11, and being the target of a glowing evaluation.

But those credits don't necessarily add up to permanent future funding.

At 10 p.m. Friday, about 30 students and several professionally successful alumni will gather on campus to write, cast, rehearse and perform six short plays -- all in 24 hours.

And as they convene for the theatrical all-nighter, those past and current students will come with no preconceived ideas of what they're about to create, the project's producers say.

"It all comes into your head on the spot," said Greg Lewis, a senior psychology major and one of two student producers of the project.

It's one of the more bizarre casualties of the MP3 age.

As music files are traded en masse through file-sharing Web sites like Morpheus and Kazaa, a band's obscure cover or remix can gain a huge following all while the name of the band itself is forgotten.

Such was the case for Austin-based alternative country outfit The Gourds.

Massive 'Towers' Weaves Beauty, Brilliance

January 09, 2003

From its breathtaking first scene to its cliffhanger ending, "The Lord of the
Rings: The Two Towers" doesn't practice cinematic restraint.

Nor does it ever have a reason to.

An epic in the grandest sense of the word, "The Two Towers" pushes
outward the scope of its predecessor -- "The Fellowship of the Ring" --
expanding the breadth of the series to gigantic proportions.
