Overview A growing grass-roots movement is gaining momentum on campus. Initiated and led by staff, and joined by interested faculty, wešre raising money to fund a need-based family scholarship program for children of employees at Carolina. The primary goal is to award scholarships for any public secondary institution in North Carolina, including the 16 UNC campuses as well as city and county community colleges. The secondary goal is to create a sense of community among UNC-Chapel Hill faculty and staff by working toward a common end -- furthering the education of employee children. Why is there a need for this fund? Some employees on our campus have base salaries near the federal poverty level, and many others are hard-pressed to meet the challenge of helping their children enroll in our community colleges or state universities. We are encouraging active participation, whether or not our own children are likely to have this level of need, because the entire Carolina community benefits and takes pride in the partnering with our fellow employees as they strive to make their education dream a reality for their children. We are at the very early stages of this effort, and hope to expand our outreach during 2004. We are also working with our financial aid office, and colleagues at NCSU to determine whether there are other ways to build upon this initiative (such as developing preferred loan programs or becoming eligible for contributions through the State Employees Combined Campaign). We are also building a strong network of campus supporters, including co-workers such as Laurie Charest, Leah McGinnis, Shirley Ort, Jeanne Smythe, Chuck Stone, Holden Thorp, and Judith Wegner. We hope by spring to have developed further details and to be able to recruit applicants for scholarships by this time next year. This website will be updated as we move forward.
