Rachel Field was born September 19, 1894 in New York City. She was educated at Radcliffe College, and grew up in Massachusetts. She was a prolific writer of books for both adults and children, and was the first woman to win the prestigious Newbery Medal. Hitty, Her First Hundred Years, illustrated by Dorothy P. Lathrop won the Newbery in 1930. Rachel Field was in her forties when she died from a surgical operation on March 15, 1942. |
