Greg Braquet
One Act Done

Latter-Day Romeo
cuts to the chase
with the loyalty
of a day-trader.

Meanwhile…

Juliet, befuddled
like a lost ball
in high weeds,
flirts the question,

“Where’s the romance?”
“Here’s your romance!”
responds Romeo,
pointing to his pants.
Juliet giggles
and acquiesces.

In the morning…

Regrets arrive
on the flip side of
the Do-Not-Disturb sign.
Time for clean up.

Juliet scampers.
Romeo’s guilt
looks for a place to hide.

The balcony
offers no room for lovers,
just a façade,
then a long way down.

Later…
In the elevator
— a long way down —
silent soliloquies
frame the final scene…

… and the audience…
Who wants an audience?
