Utah 28-Washington State 31 (Copper Bowl)

Even though Utah lost this game, it served as an indicator to show that the Utes were on the rise. They spotted WSU a three touchdown lead and scratched and clawed their way into it. In the second half, they simply shut down the Cougars star QB Drew Bledso. And the offense finally began to click. The key play of the game came late in the fourth quarter when Utah Frank Dolce lofted a pass to a streaking receiver who caught it in stride five yards behind the DB. Unfortunately, he was quick but not all that fast and was caught at the five yard line. Three plays later Utah found themselves faced with forth and goal on the two. McBride elected for the tie and sent in the kicker. Yergenson (the kicker) had been having trouble all night long and hooked it badly. Utah had one more shot at the buzzer but the Hail Mary failed. The good college try, I guess.
