Tarheel Daily Article Through a Chained Link Fence Vol. 1

Maybe it's because I'm a basketball junkie looking for a fix this week, or it's because tonight was the first games of the pre-season. Whatever, but I found some nuggets on the NBA that piqued my interest.... To tip it off, I had to address the topic of Mike returning to the Lakers....c'mon man, leave 'The Black Cat' alone....First off, the whole idea stemmed from a hypothetical question by Sam Smith to Phil Jackson. Sam probably formulated the concept during the past weekend with the guy who works the desk at Hoops the Gym. Check out what Sam said in his article on Tuesday. [ Ed. note: This link requires a quick registration with the Chicago Tribune ] It would have been a good topic of conversation to throw around at a cocktail party, and yeah you could have thrown the Phil association in there with a Mitch Kupchak Carolina family thing to make it look sexy. However, there was absolutely no way, so why would Phil even bring it up? How about taking on Sam's question to take some of the heat off the Lakers and Kobe in Maui? Thanks for the love for Mike, Phil...Even if everything shakes the right way for the Lakers and Kobe plays, do you think Mike after he got burned by the Wiz, would want to get in the mix to bail out a traveling soap opera? By the way, is it me, or is this a call for help from the wanna-be? I'm glad Mike nixed this deal quick... ***Since we're on the subject of Mike....I'm still hot about what happened in D.C. Remember, Mike was handed a team of tumors led by Rod Strickland and a black hole of salary cap space saddled with the contracts of Mitch Richmond and Juwan Howard. Yes, Kwame Brown was a project, (don't forget this would be only third year now)....Yes, he went after Stack, but who would have thought Stack would have gone soft and would later stiff him in crunch time? Those were tough moves, but he put some good pieces together...I still believe Brendan Haywood will be a very good pick-up....Jordan also cleared enough cap room for the Wizards to go get Gilbert Arenas this year. What remains to be said is that he barely would have been in year 4 as a GM to rehab a team. He also put his brand, which was more powerful than any company in the D.C. area, on a product that was based upon a foundation laid by Abe Pollin...yeech?..Just plain brutal when you realize that he had to entertain Ted Leonsis and his son before games too..... Add all of the factors up, and you'll realize that Mike should have a chance to return as a Owner/GM again. No, the Bobcats thing with Bob "Irkel" Johnson at the helm is not enough. No, the Nets deal is wrong too...I just hope that Mike sits back to get the right deal. It's going to happen, and when it does there will be hell to pay for everyone who sniped at him after that Wizards fiasco. I'm still hurting from seeing him in that Bullets throwback....The fact that he had to put that on is just plain sad... It looks like Mike was having a good time on 1060 W.Addison on Sunday night.... Someday, "The Black Cat" is going to be doing it again in his own locker room.....Watch.... ***I caught this one on Tim Thomas, and it made me laugh pretty good.... Remember, this is the same guy, who during his Senior year at Paterson Catholic H.S. in N.J., told the NYTimes that the reason why he didn't go to Carolina is because the Carolina coaching staff messed with Vince Carter's jump shot during his freshman year here....I'm just glad they kept messing with it because his form is a thing of beauty... For Tim Thomas to criticize Coach Brown and Coach Karl for his problems in Philly is insane. I wonder if anyone has realized that the reason why he left Villanova after his freshman year was because he was soft, undeveloped, and lazy. The reason why Philly gave up on him was that he was soft and lazy, and the reason why Coach Karl couldn't bank on the guy was because he was soft and lazy. Maybe I'm looking too deep, but it has always scared me that Thomas' mentor, AAU coach, and the head of the Tim Thomas Playaz is Jimmy Salmon.....Yes, the same AAU coach and head of the Tim Thomas Playaz program that J.R. Smith plays for. I promise that I will never mention that fear again.... ***Here's how you do it... Vince comes home to grab a Carolina girl with a Doctorate... like his style... It's on for Game 3 in Miami, BD Bret Dougherty is a UNC-Chapel Hill alum and current graduate student
at UNC-Chapel Hill. Bret is a co-host of WXYC SportsRap (9 PM Sundays
