Caesaria (June 2006)

The afore-mentioned steam baths. Hot vats or furnaces were placed on the stone pedestals, and cold water ran through the slots into these chambers. Caesarians soaked among the pedestals in the steamy hot bath waters to open their pores.

mosaic

Caesaria is known for inventing or developing indigo, the blue tone seen in the large floor mosaic above. At right is a closeup of the same mosaic, showing you the approximately 1/2-inch-square mosaic tiles. This mosaic is from the exercise area in front of a large Roman home.

amphitheater
One of the main features of the city was its amphitheater, shown here, reconstructed. It's been added to and updated many times, allowing it to be used for concerts and events. Bjork was here in the mid-90s, for example, causing a sensation by skinny-dipping in the Med.
