Jerusalem & Tel Aviv (June 2006)

A closeup of the Western (wailing) Wall, the only remnant of the temple destroyed by the Romans in 70 A.D. It is THE most sacred site for Jews on the planet, a kind of open air, living synagogue. Notes of prayer are stuck into every reachable nook and cranny.

Another look at the Western Wall, a photo taken surreptitiously (photography is not kosher on Satuday, the Shabbat, or sabbath; I made sure I was out of the way and non-intrusive).

wall

The Gate of Zion, one of the four entrances into Old Jerusalem. It's withstood many attacks, including in 1967 during the Six Days War, and the pockmarks and bullet holes covering the facade are evidence.

Station One of the stations of Christ along the Via Dolorosa, where Jesus carried his cross to his crucifixion. From the blue door, Pilate presented Christ to the people.

station 1
sepulchre
The exterior of the Church of the Sepulchre. Just inside the doors is Joseph's tomb, where Christ was buried, or at least it's thought this is where his tomb might have been. Various religious faiths take turns administering rites and rituals at the tomb, throughout the day, every day. While we were there, Armenian Catholics got a turn.
