Israel & the West Bank (June 2006)
jaffa mosque
A mosque punctuates the skyline of Jaffa, a port city on the Mediterranean for six millennia.

The West Bank near Ramallah can be seen beyond the barbed wire that represents one of the many layers of defense that separates Palestinian from Israeli.

scud
This scud missle landed in Israel in the Persian Gulf war. Return address: Sadam Hussein, Baghdad.

This armored bus took us into one of the Israeli settlements in the West Bank, where we heard the first-person account of a Palestinian assassination. An Israeli colonel recounted how gunmen shot and killed his son, his wife, and injured three other children.

The bus is wearing a three-inch metal covering on top of its normal skin, and all of the windows are triple-layered. As a result, it can barely make it up hills and frequently has to pull off to the side of the road to cool down.
