Several North Carolina papers have also won the Pulitzer Prize for news coverage.
In 1953 the Whiteville News-Reporter, edited by Willard Cole, and the Tabor City Tribune, edited by Horace Carter, won the Pulitzer for their coverage and editorial stands in opposition to the KKK (Klu Klux Klan), which had gone through a revival in North Carolina in the 1950's.Along with these papers, there have been several individuals in the state who have won a Pulitzer Prize. Below is a list of these names:Later in 1971, the Winston Salem Journal and Sentinel, edited and published by Wallace Carroll, won the prize for a lengthy series on environmental preservation.
In 1990, the Washington Daily News, edited by Bill Coughlin, won the Pulitzer for their coverage of cancer-causing chemicals tainting the area's drinking water, and how it was being silenced by town officials.
