Overview:

This data set contains information on state legislative election returns from 1967 through 2003. Each observation in the data set refers to an individual candidate who ran for state legislative office during this time period. There are a total of 259,000 observations in the data set.

We greatly encourage scholars and others to make use of the data for their research. If you use the data, we request that you include the following citation to the data set: "State Legislative Election Returns, 1967-2003, Thomas M. Carsey, William D. Berry, Richard G. Niemi, Lynda W. Powell, and James M Snyder, Release Version 5." Note that this version of the data set has been submitted to ICPSR and will be archived as study number 21480.
