2 june 2003 - hiking on passage island
no more interpretive training - area training is going on now! (note: for all pictures from the first two weeks, i'll have some of brandi miller's pictures up soon enough; i got lazy with my picture taking till today). our first bit of training, a hike around passage island - the easternmost island on the isle royale archipelago - to its famed lighthouse, where i'll be leading visitors on walks once the season begins.

i really enjoy the main island and its east district where i am stationed. but for some reason i found passage island really struck me today; maybe it's its value as a cultural history treasure for the park - the home of many a lighthouse keeper & their families, as well as the site of a few of the island's famed shipwrecks. we saw two eagles swooping over a cove sailing in, and it was magic from the start. well, besides finding seven dead birds :( along the trail (read: is there a west nile virus outbreak in the park?), all was quite swell. and, i am really excited about leading walks on the island. really excited (!).

left to right. (1) a view of my bedroom in the ben east house (wonderful place to live, even sharing it with a self-proclaimed neat freak; thankfully my roommate ben & i can keep our room as cluttered as we want). (2) brandi being seductive (and ben mysteriously in the background). (3) resting up waiting for the boat to passage island this morning. wow, this is new for everyone here ... or not? i am known to fall asleep anywhere and infamous for my random sayings when i wake up. anyhow, this is the first installment in valerie's photo album for the summer "all the uncomfortable positions collin can fall asleep in." :). (4) brandi & valerie yelled "GET UP!" ... me in action, what a rare sight to see! (5) jim mcgill trying to pull a collin. (6) more of brandi's brilliance, of course. (7) nice view, eh? fer sher! fer serious! jah! (there are times i feel like i'm stuck in fargo ;) haha). (8 & 9) smitty parratt (chief of interpretation) interpreting passage island. (10) i was floored by this view... (11) the passage island lighthouse. (12) ramp up from the lower dock. (13 & 14) the rocks at the end of the island. isle royale, and most of the lake superior basin, was formed by lava flows and geologic upheaval. these are the remnants of that period, and quite gorgeous to boot. (15) housemate julie michaelson. (16) jim at lunch. (17) ben. (18) valerie newman on the boat ride back.
