a weekend away
4 to 7 july 2003.

many thanks to catherine shields (friend from school and SEAC) and her friend erika for coming all the way from cedar creek biological research station in bethel, minnesota, to rescue me from ensuing drama in rock harbor ;)! we went backpacking for two nights and three days in "the porkies" (porcupine mountains wilderness state park) in the Upper Peninsula, about an hour south of houghton. the ride from copper harbor to ontonagon was stunning - aside from the ride from the airport to downtown houghton, i had seen none of the UP itself; and it proves to be very homey, rural, all the like - very similar to a drive in eastern north carolina, minus the sweltering heat and hog farms (plus a few mountains and boreal forest lands thrown in). okay, maybe they're not very similar at all geographically, but the feel of the trip was.

nonetheless, i wrote up an account for my friends to read - you can check it out here. enjoy the photographs!

we got in right at sunset friday night, so i saved the photos for the next morning. the highlight of the trip was a hike along the escarpment trail, and this is the first view we had of the valleys below. (3 & 3) first view of the lake of the clouds; and catherine and myself not far ahead. (4 & 5) more views along the escarpment trail. (6) catherine and erika eating some gorp. (7) erika working on our fire in the fire ring. (8) hiking out sunday morning, our first stop was government peak - a nice photo op, as you can see. (9 & 10) and, as many of you know, a warm shower and a nice bed are wonderful after such a trip. better yet, i got a wonderful view of the canal out my window and a comfy couch to boot! eating out was even better; and a lightning storm out my window sunday night the best part.
