21-24 august 2003 - travels!
photos aren't ready yet, but, here's a recap:

PHOTOS ARE READY
so i came home from chapel hill on wednesday; five days to "kill" - by keeping as busy as possible, of course - before leaving for iceland :). went home to winston-salem... well, i just found out tonight that my parents let walkertown annex us. so...

i guess the little redneck town is my hometown now (i feel like i have an identity crisis or something).
anyway - everything shuts down at 9 at night of course in winston. i ended up at kinko's just to have something to do at night - well, and i had to fax some stuff, but anyway... randomly suggested going to the waffle house with tami. and lo and behold, not only did she and i make it there, but so did my car's reindeer antlers...

WELL - i haven't been to the waffle house in ages. of course i had to pore over the menu...

and, well, i realized this is the last time i'd see tami for a while...

but tami was a lot more chill about it than i was

and we said good-bye, but not for good of course, and i went home to see the brand new family triptych photo deal...

my sister amy and niece grace had come up from wilmington for my birthday (hooray!). and grace decided to be a little drama queen...

there is a reason we call her princess after all :)
i got to hold her though :)
but her mom gets to hold her the most of anyone

or aunt wendy

family picture, minus me
thursday we celebrated my birthday.

holding what my sisters and i thought was a nice bottle of champagne. but actually, it's herb tea. which is DELICIOUS. just funny it came in a champagne bottle shaped bag... hmmm!
FRIDAY | EARLY MORNING ERRAND WITH LIANE | LUNCH WITH MADONNA | GRANDMA RUSTY'S!
totally impromptu day. only plan was to go straight to my grandmother's in easley, sc... then i heard from madonna ... and liane :). and had to see them both... well, as usual, i rolled into her driveway considerably later than planned. but i got to have a wonderful day; nice, eh?
STOP 1: LIANE'S NEW APARTMENT
her puzzle decorated by friends from -----.--- that site, yeah... it sounds really amazing; craftsy people helping others with collages and whatnot. maybe i'll remember to fill in those blanks some day.

liane worshiping at her shrine. or collection of trinkets

me checking out her bead table

STOP 2: CHARLOTTE; LUNCH WITH MADONNA!
alas, i had written esther to say i couldn't meet up (even though i had forgotten to tell her i was thinking about it)... but, i heard from madonna - and we managed to miss all opportunities to see each other in may - so ... couldn't miss this one before i'm gone for four more months ;).
rendezvous point: 7th & poplar.

and madonna showed and whisked me away to lang van's vietnamese restaurant.
our amazingly good pineapple fried rice

and madonna showing off her new photo pose she learned while in seoul this summer :)

STOP 3: FINAL STOP: GRANDMA RUSTY'S | EASLEY, SC
i left at 9 a.m. and made it there later than my sisters who left at 2:30! too easily sidetracked i guess...
but i didn't get to miss out on good grandma cooking and of course grandma and gracie

aunt carole and uncle dick dropped by and gave me some bday/going away cards. my favourite - their dachshund scooter kissing me a while back

grandma, amy and grace

grace and glass

grace getting some aunt wendy time

and some happy (well, except for grace deciding to fuss ;) ) family photos after lunch at the olive garden on saturday

well, i had to leave at that point; headed up the mountains to boone. but i stopped and tooled around downtown greenville (sc) for a little while.
peace center for the performing arts pavilion, greenville, sc

first sight of the mountains; u.s. 25, northern greenville county, sc.
well, going from upstate sc to boone you're inevitably going to have to go through asheville. and you don't just pass through asheville. you do asheville. especially when it's your favourite city in the world (besides seattle ;)). 1 1/2 hour stop, but i still think it deserves its own page nonetheless!
WIND UP AND DOWN AND OVER AND AROUND U.S. 221 AND MAKE IT TO STOP 4: BOONE (APPALACHIAN STATE UNIV.) TO SEE ANNIE & MELISSA. AND SURPRISE, SURPRISE - RUSTY SHOWED UP FROM W-S TOO!
(funny that i hang out with people from walkertown middle (i.e. carver high) more than folks from east forsyth?)
annie & her new apartment's (beautiful) backporch

CRASHED AT ANNIE'S | WATCHED SPELLBOUND (THANKS AGAIN, NUPUR!) | WATCHED STRONG BAD EMAILS | CHATTED ON THE PORCH | SLEPT (well, everyone but me for some reason blargh!)
and then, had to leave in the mornin'.
So homeward bound for me - but with a stop in west forsyth territory at the codies'! silly me thought they had already moved to boone; but they were still around; got to see the clemmons house one last time for memory's sake. although, i was silly and forgot to get photos of me and the codies! i just got the cats...
erin's cat simba who loves sitting in my lap - even when i was tooling around with their photo program :)
SIIIMBA

and of course, holly berry

i did get a few shots of erin's old shots from her digital camera ...
erin bein' sillllly

and new year's dinner at amanda's in salisbury...
my face somehow becomes liane's; erin's out of nowhere in the corner ;). trippy, eh?

STOP 6: HOME...
pack pack pack | write write write | visit sisters | and guess what it's almsot 6 a.m. and i'm really awake for no reason other than to celebrate having finished packing and my independent study course. off to iceland in the afternoon :). the triangle in the morning. QUITE excited. new scenery to come soon.
