Section I: Topic

Since spending five months in 2001 studying and traveling in Australia, I’ve taken an interest in Australian events and issues. Since England settled in the country and moved in its convicts centuries ago, relations between whites and aboriginals have been touchy. In recent years, white Australia has tried to make amends for years of mistreatment of the Aboriginal people with government policies and programs to help Aboriginals and promote their culture.

Through my research, I want to examine how Aboriginal people are depicted by the media and in films. Are they portrayed in a positive light? Have depictions changed throughout the years? Do white and Aboriginal filmmakers tend to portray the state of Australian race relations differently?

The audience for my research would be anyone interested in race relations, Australian culture, or media or film studies. It could be used to write an article for a scholarly journal.
