Dr. Jones’ research interests focus broadly on the processes by which families transmit both risk and resilience to their children. Dr. Jones’ work in this area has focused predominately on risk and protective processes within low-income, African American single mother families. As reflected by her publications, Dr. Jones’ work in this area has focused on the impact of a a variety of family stressors on children’s mental and physical health, including family conflict, maternal mental (e.g., depression) and physical illness (e.g., HIV/AIDS), and neighborhood risk. Specifically, her research has examined processes which may protect children from such risk factors, with a primary focus on parenting and mother-child relationship quality. Dr. Jones’ work is increasingly focusing on examining the role of the extended family network on the health and well-being of African American children from single mother homes (see AAFACT link).
