This Pathfinder is designed to provide assistance to those engaged in academic
and scholarly research on the life and works of Charlotte, Emily and Anne Brontë.
Unless otherwise noted, all the materials listed are available in the Academic
Affairs Library at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Because
the field of Brontë studies is so large, an attempt is made to suggest
the best and most authoritative materials from among all that are available.
Relevant areas which are explored in this Pathfinder include:
- Source material information listing initial editions, as well as some of
the more recent editions of the Brontës' works
- Biographical information, including print and electronic material, the definitive
biographies and details about some of the more recent editions of Elizabeth
Gaskell's Life of Charlotte Brontë
- A selection of important literary theory and criticism about the Brontës,
as well as information about the periodic reassessments of their literary
value and context which have occured over the past 100 years
- A listing of resources providing geographical, sociological and historical
materials about Haworth and West Yorkshire
- Information about relevant scholarly journals which provide information
about the Brontës and their contemporaries
- A listing of bibliographies for research beyond the scope of this Pathfinder
- Library of Congress subject headings pertaining to the Brontës, Haworth,
and West Yorkshire
- Browsing areas in the library where one might expect to find more materials
about the Brontës
