    PAPERS

  • The Notion of Television as Cultural Forum
In the syndicated television game show, “Change of Heart,” Newcomb and Hirsch’s notion of television as a cultural forum is displayed through the context of the program and the advertisements that appear on the show. The dominant message of disposability and casualness in today’s relationships between men and women is exhibited through the flow and presentation of the television program. In evaluating the relationship between society and television, one must consider the context, advertisements and target audience of the television show; as well as the multiplicity of meanings conveyed in the show...
  • The Evolution of Ethiopia
Ethiopia—called Abyssinia until the twentieth century—is the oldest independent nation in Africa. Such a historical figure like Ethiopia has many influences, which makes it a symbol of cultivating diversity. An array of ethnic, linguistic, and religious groups has driven the development of Ethiopia. Through this research paper, the evolution of Ethiopia is outlined through its influences of leaders, migrations and other countries involvement in Ethiopian affairs...
  • Civil Rights Movement and the Black Bourgeoisie, No Way Out Serves as the Derivative?
The African American Civil Rights Movement of the 1950s and 60s is the most important organized form of resistance by blacks since the Fourteenth Amendment. From the rise of Jim Crow laws and the perpetuation of segregation and racism emerged black leaders who adopted different forms of resistance such as movements of nonviolence and the contrary, "force when necessary." One of the mental effects of such racial oppression was a middle class of black bourgeoisie who wore masks to conceal their feelings of inferiority and insecurity as well as the frustrations that haunted their lives. The film No Way Out (1950) by Joseph L. Mankiewicz serves as a precursor and outline to the Civil Rights Movement and is representative of some of the ideologies of the southern black bourgeoisie.

  • 2003 Toyota Matrix Media Plan
Toyota’s 2003 Matrix is affordable, sportingly stylish and youthfully appealing with high functionality. It has all the elements that interest the youth market of 20 to 30-year-old adults. This young and ever-changing audience desires the flexibility and change that the Toyota Matrix offers. Deemed as a CUV, or cross-over utility vehicle, the Matrix incorporates many elements of a multitude of vehicles. The practicality of a sports utility vehicle, the sleek design of a hot rod and the affordability of a sedan are major concerns for young adults and apparent functions of the 2003 Matrix...

    FILM TREATMENTS AND PROPOSALS

  • "A Dying Community," a 60-minute documentary treatment and proposal
We, as a culture, do not want to see images of dying and debilitated men who are affected with AIDS. We find it easier to ignore the dilemma, then to face it. It is this indifference that hinders real progress in dealing with the victims and finding a cure. As a society, we continue to deny the victims the ability to die with dignity or live without shame. Before one can die with dignity one must be able to live with dignity. And as it stands, our culture does not dignify same sex relationships. It is no wonder that many individuals refuse to be tested for HIV and, more seriously, deny their contraction of this fatal virus...

  • "THREE JACKASSES," short film treatment
The scene opens with an establishing shot of Spanky’s restaurant on Franklin Street in Chapel Hill, N.C., from the adjacent sidewalk. The sound of roaring engines, passing pedestrians, and a distant police siren fill the air. As we zoom in on the restaurant, a hidden cut takes place by a moving vehicle. We are now on the same sidewalk as the restaurant and there is a long shot of the entrance. Eddie nonchalantly walks out of the restaurant and the music of “Don’t Worry, Be Happy” begins to play.

    DOCUMENTARY

  • "COUNTY FAIR," a short documetary
This is a documentary that I did along with my partner, Latoyia, in Comm 135, Documentary Production. We used a Sony Digital BetaCam to shoot and FinalCut Pro to edit the documentary. We shot the film at the Cleveland County Fair in North Carolina, near Shelby, and right outside of Charlotte. It took two days to film and about a month to edit. We had some really good feedback on this documetary, and what made it even better was that we got an "A". It was really fun to make, and it's extremely funny. Click on the link and take a look at a short clip of my documentary. Take a close look at the scene with the cowboy; I make a cameo appearance! COUNTY FAIR

    FILM

  • "ROXEANNE," a short film
This is a short film that I did in Comm 14, Introduction to Media Studies and Production. It is my first real production, as you probably can tell by the shaky camera work, but other than that, it's a really good. This was really fun to shoot because we had another girl in my film class to pose as a prostitute on Franklin Street in Chapel Hill, N.C., in front of a massage parlor that's allegedly a hooker parlor. I also used a number of camera effects and angles to give it a gritty, haunty illusional effect. Click to link to see a piece of my first short film. ROXEANNE
