A critical reading of Dante's Vita nuova and Inferno within the context of their ancient and medieval traditions and with particular emphasis on recent American criticism. Reading knowledge of Italian is recommended. Original text with facing English translation.

Ital 240 intends to analyze Dante’s New Life and some fundamental cantos of the Divine Comedy (Hell, Purgatory, and Paradise) within the context of their ancient sources and contemporary criticism and Dante’s complete oeuvre.

This course introduces students to the worlds of Dante, Petrarch and Boccaccio situated in the context of medieval and early modern Europe.

ITAL535: BOCCACCIO AND EUROPEAN NARRATIVE
 

Boccaccio's Decameron within the context of previous narrative traditions and subsequent development of narrative in Europe. According to their own interests, students will be guided to investigate Boccaccio's influence upon narrative throughout Europe. All texts will be in their original language and in English translation; discussion in English
