Exploring Sweden

Section 1:

I've never been to Sweden. But, I do know that it is a beautiful country full of fjords and snow-covered mountains. Also, I know that Sweden is a modern, clean place that utilizes the most advanced technology. I might be spending the summer in Sweden, and since I don't know anyone there it will be quite an adventure. That prompted to wonder about adventurers from past centuries. So, the first question I want to answer is: What were voyages through Sweden and the rest of Scandinavia like many years ago? Of course, I will not explore the Arctic north on some rickety ship. So, the next question I wanted to answer is: What is there to do in Sweden today (especially Stockholm, since that is where I'd be located)? My research would interest anyone with an interest in explorers. Also, it will interest anyone thinking of traveling to Sweden. I will search of variety of topics, ranging from dance clubs to art museums. So, the information gathered would be useful for any adult reading a national magazine or newspaper.

Pierre Omidyar - The Billionaire Behind eBay

In 1995 Pierre Omidyar launched an online auction and called it a "grand experiment in Internet commerce." Last year, eBay.com attracted 17 billion dollars from investors… consider the experiment a success (1).

eBay handles auctions of small children's toys and deals with spectacular resort homes-and everything in between. By 1998 eBay had conducted over 10 million online auctions (1).

Such widespread use of eBay contrasts its small beginnings. Originally, eBay dealt exclusively with computer hardware. Next, it included unique pez dispensers in the San Francisco area because Omidyar's wife collects them (1).

Omidyar, the 33-year-old multimillionaire, is not content to rest on his laurels. He is returning to his roots in an effort to expand eBay to new heights. He is crossing the Atlantic (2).

The entrepreneur lived in Paris before moving to the United States at the age of 6. He has returned to France, and is taking eBay with him (2).

Omidyar lost his golden touch when first trying to dominate the European online auction market. He priced in dollars and failed to account for Europe's value added tax. However, both of these problems have been addressed (2).

Since the initial struggles, eBay is doing very well in Europe. For example, it reaches 5.4 percent of the net audience in Germany-the highest percentage for any online auction site. Also, eBay boasts over 1 million items for sale in Germany, another sign of success (2).

However, making eBay more successful does not consume all of Omidyar's attention. He joined his first board position outside of his company at NoWonerd.com Corporation. Along with his time, he gives money. Omidyar gave 10 million dollars to his alma mater, Tufts University (3).
