Metabolism

An interesting side-note to consider when looking at the physics of the equestrian jumping is the metabolism of large animals, like horses.  Our physics knowledge thus far has not afforded us extensive knowledge of metabolisms, but we do know that animals that perform work give off heat energy, which generally supports the first law of thermodynamics.  Horses, after working hard in the show ring, are often times drenched with sweat and need to be bathed in cool water and walked until their body temperatures return to a normal level.  Needless to say a show horse's diet needs to be closely monitored in order to ensure that they are taking in enough calories on a daily basis.  There are a variety of different feeds that can be given to a horse, and it is important to consult your veterinarian before planning your show horse's diet.

Here are some examples of different feeds that you can give to your horse.  Often times a horse is fed a mixture of these different materials, as well as some added vitamin and electrolyte supplements.
