Chaosfield

Chaosfield is a good player. He surrounds his territory with widely spaced pill lines and waits for his opponent to attack. He calmly handles spikes, so it is difficult to have an effective attacking strategy against him. Don't let yourself be tempted into attacking his pill lines unless you are sure he will not be in the area long enough to take some pills. I haven't noticed him being especially good at killing lgms, but he has the standard skills in that area so high-risk rebuilds will not work. The best strategy against him is probably to trick him into risking his man and then to kill it, taking advantage of his helplessness to dismantle an end of his pill line. Another possiblilty is to sneak behind the pill line and rape the back bases with a double or triple spike, but often he leaves a pill or two near the very-back bases to prevent this.

My experience with CF fits the above profile as well; I should note, however, that Grimm feels that CF is NOT strictly a pillwar player. He told me that CF is good enough (wacky enough?) that when he gets on a Bolo binge, he picks whatever style suits his mood and plays it dogmatically--essentially pretending that he is a hardcore spike/raper or a devoted pillwarrior or whatever. Apparently he doesn't change to adapt to the condition, but tries to beat whoever he's up against with a pre-determined style.

I have noticed a couple of times that this adaptability may be accompanied by stubborness or inflexibility, however--CF may decide how he's going to play the game and keep playing that way no matter what else happens. Several players have suggested that this is because he's not really all that strategically aware--he's very tacticay skilled, but proceeds in predictable and nonadaptive patterns.

Chaosfield has described himself as "very risk-averse," as well, and this can be a weakness as well as an asset. Part of this relates to his most unusual contribution to Bolo--He has posted several times to RGB about the technical details of tree growth as they relate to a strategy of eco-war--harvesting trees very carefully so that Bolo's tree-growing algorithm will eventually replant most replacement trees in his territory, creating resource problems for his opponents.. His observations on the subject are important, particularly on tree-poor maps or in large games, but I think he sometimes takes them too far--he believes that he will eventually win via ecowar, so he bides his time rather than taking a chance and pressing an advantage. While I've seen him win games this way, I've also beaten him in a game where his team had a substantial advantage but failed to push forward and finish us off.
