Learning & Libations

Learning and Libations* (or L&L) is an attempt to foster increased interaction amongst students and faculty from across the broad and varied ESE department (26 full-time faculty and 130 graduate students working in a range of different sub-disciplines). Every other Friday afternoon at approximately 4:30pm, a guest from some area of the environmental profession is invited to come and share their experiences with ESE students. The gatherings are extremely informal (i.e. not a seminar) and are held off campus in the upstairs room of the Carolina Brewery (460 W. Franklin St.). Guests generally begin with some description of themselves, their background, and what they do. From there the conversation evolves based on student questions, guest anecdotes, etc. Discussion generally wraps up around 5:30pm, at which time everyone migrates downstairs to the bar. Both students and faculty seem to enjoy the opportunity to get together in a more relaxed setting, which generally serves to keep attendance in the range of 15 to 25.
