Day 3 – Mobile and Gulf Coast, Alabama

Tammy is holding a huge, heavy Asian pear that Julia got from Texas.

These are the largest Asian pears we’ve ever seen.

Eating breakfast in Julia’s fabulous dining room.

Driving from Montgomery to Mobile.

“Faith in Motion” van.

Bridge on the way to Mobile and the Gulf Coast.

Historic downtown Mobile.

Very quaint and cute.

Mobile appears to be a nice vacation town,

geared towards summer beachgoers,

but there were still quite a few people here now in October.

It may be year-round, as the weather is still very nice,

about 80-85 degrees.

Mobile is a shipping port.

Julia heard that Mobile has the largest IMAX theater in America.

Modern-looking building.

We tried to eat at this restaurant, but it was closed on Sundays.

Dew Drop Inn is known for its hot dogs loaded with toppings.

Wentzell’s Oyster House is reknowned for its oysters and seafood.

See?

The inside of the restaurant, covered in sassy one-liners written on notecards.

There is an annual oyster eating contest. In an hour, the female champion ate about 280 oysters, and the male champion ate about 405 oysters!

The inside of the restaurant.

During happy hour on weekdays, raw oysters are only 25 cents each!

Warm, buttered, toasted rolls. Yum!!

Just looking at these make me hungry.

Chili and banana pudding.

From left to right, fried oysters, black bean and corn salad, and fried shrimp.

Fried oysters are yummy! So squishy.

West Indies salad made of crab.

It tastes like ceviche.

Rated the best seafood gumbo in the nation.

Oysters broiled with parmesan.

Raw oysters!

Served with lemon juice and horseradish.

Group photo!

Nice tunnel on the way to the Gulf Coast beach.

Battleship in Mobile.

Fields of fluffy cotton.

I thought this was a pretty toll plaza.

Hotels along the beach. Rather resort-y.

More hotels along the beach.

Posing before walking to the beach.

Walkway to the beach between 2 resorts.

The coastline was very developed and this 2-foot wide walkway

was all the public access we could find.

Beautiful white-sand beach! There was a storm brewing out at sea so it was overcast and windy, but it was still pleasant; the sand was super-fine and soft, and the water was warm.

Stormy sea.

Someone built a fancy sand fort.

Here’s a close-up of the sand fort.

Another close-up of the sand fort.

Felix’s Fish Camp Restaurant.

It was never clear what a “fish camp” was.

This restaurant had a very Disney-feeling façade.

Posing near a giant fiberglass fish outside the restaurant.

Julia is making a fish face.

Walking to the restaurant.

It has an interesting entrance.

Still walking into the restaurant.

Jocelyn has a soup sampler: crab soup, seafood gumbo, and turtle soup.

Salad.

Raw oysters!

Jocelyn’s having a LOT of oysters!

Just kidding. One plate is hers, and the other is mine.

Julia has fish.

Tammy has boiled gulf shrimp.

Smile!

A fairly big gas station with a restaurant inside.

Interesting building. We couldn’t figure out what it was.
