Deep South Roadtrip

October 2006

Today, we drive from Birmingham to Atlanta, where we depart from to go home to Rochester, NY.

We ate at Watershed restaurant before flying out.

Day 7 – Atlanta

The yellow pole which Jocelyn hit while backing up from the hotel parking lot.

You can barely see the billboard. We were intrigued when we saw these mysterious billboards on the highway from Atlanta to Birmingham.

They said, “Bonsai. Starting from $20. Truckers welcome.” We were like, what is that? What’s $20 for truckers? That’s too much for a meal and too little for a hotel. Could it be some sleazy massage parlor?

Jocelyn tried looking it up on the Web, with no luck. On the drive back from Birmingham to Atlanta, we saw these billboards again. We decided we had to stop by and see what this was about.

Here is the sign outside the store.

They really were selling bonsai trees!!

How utterly random. Selling bonsai trees on the interstate highway in Alabama.

We still don’t understand how truckers would need bonsai trees. We’ll have to look more closely from now on to see if some of the big rigs have bonsai affixed to the dashboard or something.

Watershed restaurant.

This is consistently ranked as one of the best Southern restaurants in Atlanta. It was financed in part by one of the Indigo girls.

It is known for its fried chicken, which we unfortunately did not get to try because they have it on certain days at 5:30 p.m. only.

Inside the Watershed restaurant.

It’s very girly, Martha Stewart, IKEA-esque, but in a cheery and bright way.

Michelle had a fried soft-shell crab sandwich. In the upper right corner, you can see her potato salad with sour cream and bacon.

Jocelyn thought the little legs sticking out of the sandwich was disturbing—“it looks like something died in your sandwich.”

The food here was awesome! It’s a little out of the way from the rest of the Atlanta area but totally worth it.

That’s the end of our trip! Hope you enjoyed the photos. J
