The Battle of Iuka Mississippi- September 19, 1862.

Iuka Map 6' by 8' This prelude to Corinth involves about 2/3 of the forces that would meet at Corinth. In this battle, the Union takes the offensive with orders from Halleck to "prevent at all costs the movement of Price's Army northward towards Nashville." Thus, victory for the USA is dependent on keeping the north edge of the board (Ord's initial position). To this end, Ord has formed a position blocking Price while Rosecrans leads the other half of Grant's available force on a flanking march. The only communication between halves on roads is over 15 miles. Ord has been and is supposed to wait until he hears the battle from Rosecrans' actions. In real life, Grant and Ord never heard the battle and so only about 1/2 the troops got into any action. In this scenario, their odds of hearing are better, yet unlucky rolls coupled with Rosecrans inaction can yield the historical result. Historically, Rosecrans gets promoted for taking on Price alone, and Grant stays in Halleck's doghouse.

On the confederate side, Price had two conflicting sets of orders, both from superiors whom he considered not worthy. Bragg had in fact ordered an advance into Tennessee to coincide with his invasion of Kentucky and to keep Buell from being reinforced heavily. Van Dorn ( by going around Bragg straight to Davis) had gotten the go ahead for linking Price's 2 divisions with a division of Lowell, and he as overall commander, would attack Corinth. At Iuka, Price has the best of both worlds, he can chew up the Union assaults inflicting more casualties to lessen the burden to be faced at Corinth. If he manages to open a route northward he could disregard Van Dorn and tell Van Dorn to meet him in Tennessee, while making Bragg/Kirby Smith happy and scaring Halleck. However, he thinks that Ord's position represents the whole USA force so he is worried when the cavalry reports Rosecrans on the corner road at 2pm.

Scenario Starts at 1400 and ends at 1830 (visibility 4" on 1830).

Victory Points -

Objectives for the Union (cutting off Price's retreat) -the crossroads near Heberts starting position = 4 pts.

the middle right crossroads leading to lower right corner= 10

Confederate - A controlled road path from the lower right corner to the upper left corner is a huge automatic victory.

Maury's Division is in +1 works as are Gates/Green. These works form a lineto defend against Ord. Maury is frozen until Ord is activated.
