Montgomery, Alabama
July 10, 1999

On our way from Selma to Montgomery, we traveled along historic Highway 80, the same 54-mile stretch of highway that civil rights protestors marched along back in 1965.  We arrived in Montgomery and visited the Dexter Avenue King Memorial Baptist Church, where Martin Luther King, Jr., used to preach.  After a morning of asking questions and learning about the church, we stopped by the Southern Poverty Law Center's Civil Rights Memorial, a beautiful area designed by the same woman who designed the Vietnam Veterans' Memorial, Maya Lin.

Inside Dexter Avenue Memorial Baptist Church, Michael Pembleton and chaperone
Rev. Bertha Thurman stand in the shadow of Dr. King.

Freedom Project's Rev. Thurman took a turn behind the pulpit at Dexter Avenue Baptist.  With her booming voice and eloquence, she could give Dr. King a run for his money!
