Emmett Till was a 14 year old black boy. He was a native of Chicago. He
always went to Mississippi in the summer. His mother Mamie Till told him
to respect white people in Mississippi, but he never learned the rules
of Mississippi. The blacks could not associate with white people in Mississippi.
Then one Thursday in 1955 in Money, Mississippi, he showed some boys a
picture of a white girl. The boys said "I bet you won't talk to that white
woman (in the store)," and he went in the store and bought some candy.
When he was walking out he said "bye baby" and walked out.
That weekend her husband Roy Bryant brutally killed Emmett Till. Mamie
Till had an open casket funeral to show the world what they had done to
her son.
The world was very sad. Roy Bryant threatened to kill Mose Wright, Emmett
Till's 64 year old uncle. A reporter later paid Roy Bryant and J.W. Milam
to tell what happened. The men admitted to beating Till, but not murdering
him. They found the men not guilty. The world was shocked by the verdict.
The people all over the world were mad, because of the funeral. They were
mad, because the jury didn't do anything to the men who killed Emmett Till.
They had seen the picture of Emmett Till in the casket in Jet magazine,
and that made them sad. That is what I learned about Emmett Till.
