How did Freedom Summer '99 go?
Freedom Summer '99 was a smashing success!
For four weeks in June, thirty Sunflower County middle school students
attended classes at Mississippi Delta Community College. Students
participated in structured academic and cultural activities that emphasized
technology, Mississippi History, and culture. At the end of the four
weeks of classes, they displayed their work to parents and community members
at a special Freedom Day. Their projects included:
-
A web page displaying Internet-based research on the civil rights movement
-
A series of reflective essays on the book that they had spent the summer
reading, Anne Moody's Coming of Age in Mississippi
-
An oral history project displaying interviews with members of the community
-
A full-length dramatic performance, "Mean to be Free," on the Underground
Railroad
After Freedom Day, students hit the
road! They took a nine-day field trip to places of educational interest
all across the South, including New Orleans, Biloxi, Montgomery, Selma,
Birmingham, and Atlanta. These field trips
sound interesting. Tell me more!
