School Commitment, School Achievement and Media Use in Early Adolescence: A typology of student groups

Education is frequently cited as one of the main variables structuring the media audience. However, while researchers have devoted extensive and detailed attention to the diversity and segmentation of the media audience, education tends to be dealt with one-dimensionally as some kind of achieved level. The goal of this paper is to explore in greater depth how different dimensions of education interact with media uses and preferences. Results indicate that the relationship between education and the media begins earlier and is more intricate than has hitherto been supposed. The importance of gender differences in mediating these relationships is stressed and various implications for future research are discussed.
