JOMC 50 Research:
Bluegrass Music

I. My Topic

My topic is bluegrass music and although I like bluegrass music I know very little about it. I know there are five main instruments used in bluegrass: the banjo, the mandolin, the guitar, the fiddle, and the bass. Over time bluegrass has evolved and there are now several different categories of bluegrass, including traditional, contemporary and progressive. Traditional bluegrass is bluegrass just as it was in the beginning; the same songs, done the same way as they originally were. Contemporary bluegrass changes things a bit. Contemporary artists may take a traditional song and change the composition of it or they may do a non-traditional song in a traditional way. Progressive takes its bluegrass roots and intertwines them with jazz or rock to get rid of almost all traditional sound. Progressive bluegrass is often called newgrass.

In this project I hope to find out more about the roots of bluegrass. Where did it come from? What is the history of the instruments now used predominately in bluegrass? Who has influenced the bluegrass industry?

My intended audience is anyone who wants to know more about bluegrass and would be interested in attending bluegrass festivals or listening to bluegrass music, the people who would pick up a bluegrass magazine.
