Description: This site traces the history of the banjo from its use in Sub-Saharan Africa to its popularity in the Grand Ole Opry to its use today in jazz and newgrass. There are also links to the history of the fiddle, guitar, accordion and harmonica all used in bluegrass music.

Title: International Bluegrass Music Association

Description: This site has lots of useful information. Under the Heading “About Bluegrass” there is a subheading called “History” which traces the roots of bluegrass all the way back to the 1600s. The site also has a list of “Resources” that has links to Bluegrass magazines and web pages. The site clearly out lines the mission of the organization and provides lesson plans and other tools for teachers.

Title: Bluegrass Odyssey Neil Rosenberg and Carl Fleischhauer

Description: This site provides a video of a presentation that Rosenberg and Carl Fleischhauer did on their book Bluegrass Odyssey: A Documentary in Pictures and Words, 1966-86. Rosenberg talks about the influences and roots of bluegrass. Throughout the presentation he show a lot of really amazing photographs.

Description: This page has a “history” link that tells the history of bluegrass in the mountains of Western North Carolina. Bluegrass got its roots in North Carolina from Southern Appalachian traditional Music. Similarly, Bill Monroe, the father of what is now known as bluegrass, formed his band, the Blue Grass Boys, in Asheville, NC. This page also has a good “other links” tab.

Title: International Bluegrass Music Museum

Description: This site has a good “Hall of Honor” link. It lists the inductees from 1991-2001 and gives a brief summary of their musical accomplishments. This provides a nice list of people who have influenced the industry. There is also a good “calendar” link which lists bluegrass festivals going on all across the country.
