The Internet Brings Convenience
of
Modern Technology to Traditional Music
Unlike
most music forms, bluegrass has fiercely clung to its traditional
roots. Although many bluegrass artists are creating what has become
known as contemporary or progressive bluegrass, there are still
many staunch traditionalist who criticize any bluegrass artist
that strays from the classic sound. Despite the growing feud between
traditionalist and non-traditionalist there is no argument that
the internet has helped to unite the bluegrass community and make
it easier than ever to find bluegrass happenings and fans.
There
are hundreds of web pages devoted to nothing but bluegrass festivals.
A bluegrass fan never feels more at home than at a festival
and now thanks to the Internet anybody can find the closest festival
just by sitting down at their PC. Before the Internet, fans had
to depend on word of mouth or wait until they saw a flyer to
know when festivals were taking place. Now not only are there
websites,
fans can also subscribe to online magazines or listserves that
update them on not only festivals, but all the happenings within
the bluegrass industry.
The
Internet has vastly changed the bluegrass musician’s
world as well. Musicians can now buy sheet music and instruments
online. Similarly, musicians can also sell their own music
online. This comes in very handy for the not-so-mainstream musician.
Even after the fall of Napster there is a huge market for music
online.
Fans and musicians alike can share their music files making
it
easier for less known artists to get their name out there.
Moreover, virtually ever musician alive today has his or her
own webpage.
Thanks to the internet fans and artists are closer to each
other than ever before.
