Creating a Web Document: The Basics for UNDERGRADS

Start with an empty disk.  When you finish the process, give me the disk -- make sure you put your name on it--,  a clean copy of your paper on which you highlight all the changes based on the feedback I offered, and the original, graded paper.

CONVERTING WORD TO HTML (the web language)

START with a WORD DOCUMENT

  1. Open your document in WORD.
    1. Put the paper and any bibliography / works cited page in the SAME document, if it is not already there.
To do the above, open your works cited page. etc. in a separate window. Choose EDIT, SELECT ALL, COPY.
Then, go back to the main page, which has your paper on it.
Scroll to the bottom, and press PASTE.
  2. Run SPELL CHECK and proof read one more time (it's faster to spell check HERE than using the WEB spell-checker).
  3. Go to FILE, SAVE AS, choose "HTML" from the scroll window (that probably says WORD Document now).
  4. FUN STUFF: Choose a background by going to FORMAT, BACKGROUND.
    1. Choose a color or a texture by clicking: FILL EFFECTS. (Make it look scholarly / professional).

      AVOID THE FOLLOWING

  5. FUN STUFF: Choose a horizontal line by going to INSERT, HORIZONTAL LINE.  Put one between your main text and your works cited page.  Then put one AFTER the works cited page.
  6. Under the 2nd horizontal line, write "Created for Educational Purposes Only."  Hit return, you can add the date created, a copyright symbol,  and your email address.
  7. Save to your disk and to your desktop (just in case).

PREPARING & FINANLIZNG the WEB DOCUMENT

THE CONTENT

  1. Open NETSCAPE (on the web)
  2. On the line which says "FILE,"  choose COMMUNICATOR and then open PAGE COMPOSER.
  3. Open your document (which is still on the floppy, but saved as an HTML file) in this new window.
  4. Choose SAVE
    1. DO NOT PUT ANY SPACES IN YOUR FILE'S NAME.  HTML CODES WILL NOT OPEN IT ON THE WEB.
        • For example, your file might say Ellen_Foster NOT Ellen  Foster (NO space between words)
  5. Choose a FONT and the size you want (10 or 12 work best).  If you want the words to appear in a different color, choose EDIT, SELECT ALL, and then click on the color.  AVOID WHITE because it will not print.
  6. Make sure the document looks need.  Adjust any strange margins and/or spaces.  (Note: HTML will single-space the document.  Leave it that way.)
  7. Highlight your title, the "works cited" label, and any other things you want to emphasize.  Add your name under the title.
  8. AGAIN, SAVE your document to your disk.

OPTIONAL: BACKGROUND
  • If you want a different background (other than the one you chose earlier), go to: http://windyweb.com/design/gallery/ (or any other web site that offers FREE backgrounds.  Check out class web page for other links)
        1. find a background you like.  To save it to your web space, click on the RIGHT mouse and choose "SAVE BACKGROUND AS."  Make sure you save it to your floppy.
        2. To add the newfound-background to your page, open your page.
          • Go to FORMAT, Page Colors and Properties, then in the bottom 1/3 of the gray screen, go to CHOOSE FILE.
          • Find the file from your floppy, double click on it.
          • Then, it should automatically appear in the the white space that says "choose file."
          • Make sure that NOTHING appears before the file name.  Delete anything odd.
            • For example, if the computer inserts something like this: file:///C|/pictureswater.gif.  DELETE  file:///C|/ so that only pictureswater.gif remains.
          • If your text overlaps your background on the screen's left-hand side, choose EDIT, SELECT ALL.  Then click on the RIGHT INDENT arrow (the second to last icon with the right-pointing arrow on the row of commands that has font size on it).  Click on that a few times, until you like how it looks.)

    TARGETS & INTERNAL LINKS
      1. In the bibliography / works cited section, double click on the author's name (one at a time, obviously).  Then, click on the TARGET icon (on the 2nd row that begins with "new").  When the author's name appears in the box, click OKAY. Repeat for all.
      2. After you've finished TARGETING your citations.  Scroll up into your MAIN DOCUMENT.
          • Highlight the FIRST reference to each corresponding citation.
          • Choose the LINK icon.
          • Choose the name from the target list you created.
          • Click OKAY. (TA DA!  You created an INTERNAL LINK!)
      3. To verify that the links work, choose PREVIEW, click YES when it asks you if you want to save the revisions, then test the links in the page.
      4. If you need to change anything, go back to the PENCIL icon version of your file (look on the bottom line of your computer screen).  You cannot revise on the web itself.

To insert LINK from a word in your text to A DIFFERENT web page (EXTERNAL LINKS).

    To insert an IMAGE
      1. To shrink the image size, go to a CORNER and position your cursor so you get the little diagonal arrow-line.  Shrink accordingly.

CREATING and/or REVISING YOUR PERSONAL WEB PAGE or any of the PAGES YOU CREATE
      1. Open NETSCAPE, choose COMMUNICATOR and then PAGE COMPOSER
      2. Open the appropriate file (your personal web page (or "home" page) is called "index". . . NEVER CHANGE THAT!  NEVER CALL ANOTHER PAGE BY THAT NAME!)
      3. Your INDEX (HOME) page should do exactly that, INDEX the materials a visitor can access from your site.
      4. To create a link to your art paper or to any other page you create, highlight the item you want linked, then choose LINK, and then find the file's title.
      1. Follow directions below for added features.

Working directly in your PUBLIC HTML SPACE
