Length: 2-3 pages

Value: 5% of your grade

Text: Allen & Bacon, 735-736

DUE: January 29

Now that you have collected data and started drawing conclusions, gather information from current scientific research on how poor eating and exercise habits lead to serious health risks.

Choose a specific health problem (heart disease, cancer, osteoporosis, obesity, high blood pressure etc.) that is aggravated by poor eating / exercise. If possible, choose an issue your are familiar with. . . a health problem that you yourself, or a relative or family member has experienced.

Based on your research, write a literature review. See by Allen and Bacon (735-6).

A synthesized discussion of the most recent medical findings on your topic (limit your search to the findings from 1993 - present on the specific medical topic of your choice). Read 1h and 2d in A & B.

Your literature review should bring your audience up to date on recent research findings about your focus area.

Read widely (see library research guide).

Read chapter 33 & 34 in A & B.

Organize your paper by IDEAS and "infe[r] themes, problems, trends, and so on" (A & B 736).

Use correct documentation style (36d in A & B).

SOME QUESTIONS TO ASK YOURSELF: What are the symptoms, treatment, results of going untreated, etc.?

How can I most effectively synthesize the materials I find?

Make copies of the articles you find. It’s amazing what you miss in the first "read". As your ideas change, you should re-read these articles. Do NOT waste your time by having to hunt them down again because the book may not be there the second time around.

LIBRARY WORK

Spend class time locating articles from the following databases. You should give:

first priority: professional journal articles (ex: AJM, Medical journals etc.)

second priority: popular magazine articles and newspapers (Time, Newsweek, etc.)
