Guidelines for Requesting Recommendation Letters

A GENERAL NOTE:

The strongest and most informed recommendation letters are provided from instructors who:

1) have instructed you in at least 2 courses, or an independent study project, or

2) have employed you as a research or teaching assistant, or

3) have served as a committee member on a thesis or dissertation committee

*The above comments should guide you in asking for recommendation letters.Among the things I will say in a recommendation letter are 1) how well and for how long I=ve known you; 2) in what capacity I know you (student, teaching or research assistant, committee member, or all of those); 3) the grades you have earned in courses from me; 4) your work ethic at the time I knew you; and 5) your suitability for the job/graduate position for which you are applying.

*Consequently, I will need the following materials in order to write reccomendation letters that will give the best possible portrayal of your attributes. Please provide those to me in hard copy unless otherwise negotiated:

1) a current vita or short summary of your past two years activities

2) a transcript copy from all institutions attended

3) a copy of the job ad or short description of the intended job, or a short description of the graduate program for which you are applying

4) clear instructions of where the letter is to be sent (to you or to someone else)

5) a clear due date that is not less than 1 week in the future unless otherwise negotiated
