Lake Washington School District 1993-1995

Kirkland, Washington

Staff Development Specialist/Curriculum Leader

The staff development team of seven specialists designed, developed and delivered professional development programs and courses to a district of 1250 teachers and administrators. Programs included strands for assessment, instructional strategies, technology and teaching for diversity. Workshops and classes I've designed and presented include classroom management, differentiating/adapting the curriculum, portfolio assessment, performance assessment, learning styles, cooperative learning and Internet for K-12 teachers and administrators. I had the lead role in coordinating teacher inservice programs for up to several hundred teachers at a time, which included organization, delegation and planning for numerous presenters to appear at a variety of locations simultaneously. I was the team leader for a two week New Teacher Orientation and a one week Demonstration Classroom Teacher/TOSA training. I helped conduct the hiring process for eight Teachers on Special Assignment and several new specialists.

The specialist position included three additional major roles; one involving collaboration and work with building administrators and their staffs to assist in restructuring efforts, another involving the planning, implementation and supervision of thirty-six district wide K-12 demonstration classrooms, and the supervision of eight Teachers on Special Assignment as the district's new Student Profile and Curriculum Frameworks were being implemented.

In restructuring efforts, my role changed according to the needs of the building, the goals of the principal, and regional priorities. Responsibilities included leading teacher teams/staffs in various projects such as integration of curriculum for Eastlake High School and Evergreen Junior High, and differentiating curriculum for required English and social studies courses at Juanita High School. I led goal setting and evaluation meetings for various staffs.

I assisted teachers in designing and implementing various Advanced Placement courses and a senior projects/exhibitions program called Senior Connections at a high school which was recently accepted into the Coalition of Essential Schools. Juanita High School's building based Process Team asked me to assist them in developing operating principles and a decision making model. I assisted building administrators in developing Mentor Programs for high school students, and have trained teachers to conduct peer-observations and peer-coaching.

At each of my schools I mentored new teachers, worked with teachers who were considered "at risk", or were experiencing difficulty in their classrooms. They needed help in classroom management skills, instructional strategies or curriculum. I conducted informal and clinical observations, pre- and post-interviews, did evaluations, and assisted them in developing action plans for improvement.

A major emphasis of the district was to develop a district curriculum for all subjects, based on national and state efforts, and best practices in teaching. I had a lead role in writing the K-12 science curriculum, benchmarks, designing the overall template, and in creating training for staff and administrators to understand and begin implementing the curriculum frameworks in all content areas. I helped create a workable process for auditing and aligning existing elementary and secondary curriculum, as well as, developed training components for each.

My knowledge and implementation of team process and decision making skills developed significantly while working on the staff development team, where we rotated responsibilities of chairperson, team leader and project coordinator. Our individual and group abilities in short- and long-term planning along with our successful Demonstration Classroom program were highlighted by the Washington Staff Development Council as they informed us of our selection for a Meritorious Program Award in June '94. Our team was selected to make a presentation at the 1996 National Staff Development Council conference held in Chicago.
