Digitization of Cultural Heritage

The purpose of this web site is to look at some of the basic issues that come up when making cultural heritage materials available on the web. This site is intended for use by individuals interested in making web sites at home or school, and is definitely not for institutional use. This site discusses three of the most important aspects of digital collections.

The first section describes some of the thought that should go into selecting the material for your site. The second section discusses practical issues of digitization, including file formats. The third section discusses issues of site design, how to make your site attractive and user-friendly. In each section, the author of this site, a Masters Candidate in Library Science at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, will discuss how she went about making these same decisions for her own digital project, "Holyoke-Reaves: Photographs of a Family," which was published online on December 11, 2001.
