LOVING-KINDNESS MEDITATION STUDY

Dear mental health care consumer:

I would like to tell you about a new research study on loving-kindness meditation for people with schizophrenia.  This study is being conducted at the STEP clinic in the UNC Neuroscience Hospital or OASIS mental health center and may be an opportunity for you to participate in a free meditation group.

There is evidence that meditation has many physical and mental health benefits so I am working together with professors Barbara Fredrickson at UNC and Ann Kring at the University of California-Berkeley to do a study of loving-kindness meditation for people diagnosed with schizophrenia.

If you decide to participate and are eligible you will be asked to attend a 6-week loving kindness meditation workshop (comprised of 6, one-hour sessions). The workshop is offered at no charge and transportation can be provided.  The workshop will be led by a trained meditation leader and co-led either by myself or an advanced graduate student in clinical psychology.  You’ll also be asked to meet with a researcher to do 4 interviews over the course of the study. The interviews will be about your life and topics such as your symptoms, emotions, relationships and activities. These interviews will happen before the workshop ever begins, afterward, and then 3 months after it is over. Each interview will take approximately 2 hours and you can receive up to $105 for participating ($15.00 for completion of the first shorter interview, and $30.00 for each 2 hour interview).

If you would like to request more information or see if you are eligible to participate you should call the research coordinator DJ (Dave Johnson) at 919-259-198 or email (dpj@unc.edu).

Respectfully,

David L. Penn, Ph.D.
Professor of Psychology
