Internet Humor

The Internet is a great source of humor, witisisms, spoofs and stories. It allows the easy flow of comedy from person to person via e-mail, chat and bulletin boards.- entoo.org

Humor on the Internet is found in many forms and it is free!!! Individuals (see the page of Todd E. Van Hoosear for some funny takes of the "History of the Net, Unix, and C.") or companies post their own websites dedicated to things they find humorous because they want to share them with others (see Progress's Humor pages- this link will take you to a funny about "Mouse Balls"- Mouse Balls available as a Field Replacement Unit) ; some of these specify that they show only "politically correct humor," while others definitely do not fit into this category. There are many sites dedicated to nothing but humor, such as Humor.com, which provides an array of humour related services, or Chistes.com, which provides jokes for Hispanos from a variety of different countries. Also, many sites such as AhaJokes.com invite you to share your humor with them (by sending in a joke, or a mini-clip, or something you have invented.)

What is internet humor? It's anything you may find funny on the Internet, whether it be in text, video, image, or audio format. Humor is a relative term, what may be humorous to me (Create-a-fart.com or DancingPaul.com) may not be the least bit amusing to you. On what platforms is Internet humor distributed, you ask? Well, through e-mail (you know, those jokes or images or stories that are passed around from unknown source usually), or also jokes that are sent to you after subscribing to a service like funnymail.com, through sites dedicated to humor or which devote a few pages to humor which you will see a lot of on this site, in Chatrooms, Instant Messaging, or anything else you can think of that is transmittable on the Internet.

It's amazing how much humor you can find if you know where to look. This site will provide some suggestions and many links to funny places, some in Spanish...because laughing is good.

Key Definitions and Terms to Understand

COMPUTER:
Instrument of torture. The first computer was invented by Roger "Duffy" Billingsly, a British scientist. In a plot to overthrow Hitler, Duffy disguised himself as a German ally and offered his invention as a gift to the dictator. The plot worked. On April 8, 1945, Hitler became so enraged at the "Incompatible File Format" error message that he shot himself. The war ended soon after Hitler's death, and Duffy began working for IBM, then switched to Microsoft!
CPU:
Central Propulsion Unit. The CPU is the "computer's" engine. It consists of a hard drive, an interface card, and a tiny spinning wheel that's powered by a running rodent --- a gerbil if the machine is a 486 model, a ferret if it's a Pentium, and a ferret on speed if it's a Pentium Pro.
PROGRAMMERS:
Computer avengers. Once members of that group of high school nerds who wore tape on their glasses, played Dungeons and Dragons, and memorized "Star Trek" episodes; now millionaires who create "user friendly" software to get revenge on whoever gave them noogies.
REFERENCE MANUAL:
Object used to raise the monitor to eye level. Also handy to compensate for that short table leg.

Skills to Master

An important skill to become a "master" in this area is coordination (of George W.'s Dance Routine, that is.) Practice makes perfect and serious focus is an absolute necessity. No fooling around. Fun, wasn't it? There are a whole lot of different options at Miniclip.com that are worth checking out. I recommend "Bush Aerobics" and the "Hillary Clinton at the Senate."

Once you have exercised your fingers mouse clicking George W., move onto this bigger challenge by testing your abdominal muscles under stress. Master the skill of trying not to laugh by reading these Yo Mama Jokes from AhaJokes.com.

Tips and Tricks

A good way to get to know about Internet Humor and where to find it is to start off at your browser's homepage. For example, using the browser StarMedia, you can go directly to their Humor section, and find jokes, funny images and animations (of course this is for Spanish speaking users) or you can perform your own Internet wide search from their browser. Similarly, at msn.com you can go directly to their search pages and look under humor. An example: say you like satire and parody or comic strips, just check out the sites they offer.

Another tip: remember to think before sending someone something you think is funny but really may not be to them. I've offended a few people by sending crassly humorous things I received through e-mail. There are a wealth of offensive jokes out there: try Arran's Best Jokes or Aussie Jed's Tasteless Jokes Archives!!!! Incidentally, both of these guys are Australian, interesting.....

Helpful Resources

Believe it or not, there are books you can buy about Internet Humor, but why bother? You can find out all you need online. If you're concerned about say, posting offensive jokes, just add a disclaimer entrance page advising those who do not want to be offended to stay out (see the Australian's pages up above) and also think about what you send people or say before committing yourself to your words. Humor should make you laugh, and if you have to think twice about whether or not your humor would offend someone else, it probably would!

The availability of almost anything at our fingertips due to the Internet has its bad points, but more opportunities for smiling and laughing is not one of them. Enjoy...
