Response to Questions

What does this structural view of the book communicate?

This structural view communicates the heirarchy of information represented in its words. You could say the divisions represent packets of information within larger packets within larger packets and so on. Once again I draw upon the analogy of the DVD scene selection. The scenes that are given to you as options to choose are represented in words and a picture by the main theme of the scene but do not touch upon all of its points. Not until you go a bit deeper into the "Action" as I have called it, do you start to pick up upon the "episodes" represented by the larger packet (in DVD, scene selections and in my structure also "Scene").

Could your scheme be automated (automatically tagged)?

I'm not quite sure this scheme could be automated. I'm assume it could although I admit I'm not sure what "automatically tagged" really means. I know it could be tagged in XML or in HTML, although not with the same words I have selected for the divisions.

Of course, the divisions would be based upon the tagger's interpretaion of the novel, since there are no formal divisions in the form of chapters or spaces between sections.

If the book were an electronic book, list TWO new features/capabilities that could be added. What tags would you assign to these new features?

If this book were available electronically, a language feature to change language could be added. I included one in my scheme, because the book is in Spanish, though I know that it has been translated into English, as Sender is one of the Spanish Civil War's greatest authors. A simple language tag would take care of this.

A second feature I would be images to accompany the text, perhaps to go along with scene selection. I know that there is a movie based on the novel, and pictures could be added to the scene descriptions to make them more easily recognizable andtrigger the mind/memory in a way that words may not be able to. This tag could be an image tag.
