The American Slumber Party
About the Slumber Party
The American Slumber Party was formed in 1998 by a group of citizens who believed that the existing two-party system had failed this great nation by breeding corruption and cynicism and by undermining the mutual faith and trust that is the bedrock of a civil society. To demonstrate their commitment to civility, decency, common sense, and humanity, the party membership took the historic step of nominating a dog, Feynman, for election to the Presidency of the United States of America in 2000. It is the hope of the Slumber Party that this campaign can help unite all Americans, of whatever race, creed, or species, behind the goal of building a better and more civilized tomorrow.
Statement of Principles
The American Slumber Party believes
- that all life is precious;
- that all higher mammals have, to the degree of their consciousness, the right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness;
- that humanity should endeavor to work with nature, rather than against it;
- that the general welfare is the general responsibility;
- that strong familes, packs, and communities are the bedrock of a free society;
- that a free society must necessarily be a civil society; that a civil society can exist only in an atmosphere of mutual trust and good faith; and that it is the responsibility of a society's leaders to model and promote such qualities;
- that the development of the sciences, the humanities, and the arts should be for the benefit of all, and should promote the values of a free and just society;
- that no one can be free while holding absolute power over another, and that accumluations of power tend irresistably to corruption and misery; and
- that material progress, while desirable, should not come at the cost of humane values.
Slumber Party Platform
The American Slumber Party will hold its next convention in July, 2000, and will draft its formal platform at that time.
