About Me... I am a native Texan, but am currently living in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, where I attend The University of North Carolina. I was born August 9, 1982 in Tyler, Texas and moved to Lufkin, Texas when I was six months old. I lived in Lufkin - an East Texas town of about 35,000 - for 17 years. My dad is a veterinarian, and I spent much of my childhood going on housecalls with him and playing secretary at his office. My mom is a medical technician, and while groing up, I also spent many long hours watching her work magic on inumerable laboratory machines. Despite spending my life surrounded by science in one form or another, I was always drawn to art and literature. At Lufkin High School, I excelled in English and danced on the school's drill team - the Panther Pride. I also danced with a private competition team - The Dancin' Divas - at the Academy of Gymnastics and Dance. I graduated from high school in May 2000 and headed to UNC that August. I became interested in journalism my sophomore year, when I began working on the State & National Desk of The Daily Tar Heel. Since then, I have held various positions at the DTH and have interned with Texas Monthly and the St. Petersburg Times. I am wrapping up my term as DTH Editor-in-Chief and anticipate graduating in May with a degree in journalism, with a news-editorial concentration.
