the lives of teenagers. There are still ads promoting trendy products and
styles, but there is more attention on how current events will impact young
women. For example, under "Reality Check," there is an article
concerning the recent attack on America and the effect it may have on Muslim
Americans. By giving young women a chance to voice their concerns and view
the concerns of their peers, the article is telling women it is acceptable
to be aware of what is happening in our country. There are also more "Reality
Check" articles dealing with the attacks: how celebrities are giving
aid; how the country is mourning; and how the readers of seventeen.com
can help. All of these articles promote the value of social awareness and
the value of being a responsible, helpful citizen.
Seventeen plays an important role in socializing young females. Images,
narratives and ads found the magazine socialize young women into a world
of beauty, fashion and men. However, Seventeen also attempts to encourage
young women to look beyond the images of beauty, fashion and men; Seventeen
presents real life issues that many teenagers face. Seventeen may
tell young women what they should look like, what clothes to wear and what
boys to like, but it also conveys a deeper message: it is important to be
aware of what is happening beyond the pages of a magazine.
