Grading and Projects
Grading
25% Quizzes
20% Midterm Exam
25% Final Exam
25% Writing Assignments
5 % Attendance/Participation
Please Note:
Late assignments will be deducted 20 points for each day they are late
beginning immediately after the class period on which the assignment
was due. After five days, including weekends, you will receive a zero
for that assignment. No exceptions will be made after the due
date for the assignment has passed. If you have any questions
or problems with a due date you should see me before the assignment
is due in class.
Quizzes and Exams
Take note that only 45% of your grade is derived from in-class exams.
The composition and content of the exams will be discussed in class
in detail the week before the exams. THERE WILL BE NO MAKE-UP EXAMS
GIVEN. In addition to the midterm and the final, there will be a short
quiz every Wednesday at the beginning of the class. These quizzes are
designed to help you keep up with the visual material by dividing the
material into smaller sections for memorization. The quizzes will consist
of ten slide identifications, each identification should include the
name of a work of art or architecture, the artist or architect (if known),
the place - city and country - (if architecture, monumental sculpture,
or wall painting), the date of the work of art, and the historical period
to which it belongs. All this material will be listed on your Slide
Lists.
Visual Literacy Writing Assignments
An important component of learning about art is learning to write about
art, which is a separate, albeit related, process from learning to look
at art. We will be using an additional textbook entitled, Visual
Literacy:
Writing about Art, as a model for learning to look, think and write
about the Visual Arts. Several different types of papers will be assigned
based on readings from this book that we will discuss in class on alternating
Fridays. More details about each small paper will be given in handouts
throughout the semester. Attendance
When you registered for this class you agreed to attend every lecture.
Your class participation grade depends in part upon your showing up
to every meeting. In addition, the design of the class is such that
if you miss lecture you will miss content that you may not be able to
find outside of class. On the other hand, simply showing up for class
does not equal good class participation. This course will require that
you be prepared to offer your opinions, ask questions, and elicit discussion
when appropriate. If you have any questions or concerns about this requirement,
don’t hesitate to come and talk to me.
** The University Attendance policy is in effect in this class. This
policy states that students with fewer than 28 hours (Freshmen) whose
absences exceed 15% of class meetings (9 class days) are removed from
the course with an "F," as are students with 28 or more hours
(Sophomores - Seniors) who are absent in excess of 25% of the class
meetings (14 class days). This policy includes all absences,
including those excused by the university.
